Science Club: Interactive Journey from Awareness to Action: Tues, April 28th @ 6:00 PM, Cafetorium

April is the month we celebrate Earth Day. This engaging lesson introduces students to the story behind Earth Day: why we celebrate it, how it began, and why it matters. Students will explore our planet as a living system and learn about the three major types of pollution—air, water, and land—in a way that is both accessible and memorable.

Through a guided discussion, children will think critically about common items they use every day—such as plastic bags, straws, glitter, and Styrofoam cups—and guess how long these items take to decompose. This leads to an important realization: much of this waste does not simply disappear, but instead breaks down into microplastics that can re-enter our food system.

Students will learn about the impact of these pollutants on our environment and on all living things. They will then be encouraged to think of better solutions and practical ways they can help protect the Earth.

The highlight of the workshop is a hands-on, interactive activity using a model city ecosystem made from recycled materials, including a farm, factory, household, river, beach, and ocean.

This dynamic activity helps students visually and physically understand how pollution travels—and how human choices can either harm or help the planet. They will also see how easy it is to create pollution and how difficult it can be to clean it up.

By combining storytelling, science, and play, this lesson will leave children not only informed, but also inspired to become thoughtful stewards of the Earth and to build a deeper sense of responsibility and connection to nature.

No sign-up is needed and all grades are welcome.
