5th Grade Trip to
Catalina Environmental Leadership Program
While at CELP, students are guided through a series of land and sea explorations, each aimed to bring about a greater understanding and connectedness to self, others, and the environment.
What will our students do at CELP?
Catalina's unique ecosystems create living classrooms which are ideal for hands-on, experiential learning. Whether snorkeling, hiking, kayaking or tide-pooling, students observe first-hand how each ecosystem they visit, while unique in many ways, operates according to similar ecological principles. The CELP Principles are woven into each lesson and shown to be a recipe for a sustainable system.
Our students will be placed in groups and partake in a 3-day program that includes a variety of land and sea activities. CELP Groups are a series of Core Programs (pre-selected by CELP) and Elective Programs (chosen by Franklin’s fifth grade teachers).
Where is CELP?
Howlands Landing lies on the California side of Santa Catalina Island, 22 miles from the Port of Los Angeles. Several hundred feet of beach and a private pier provide access to the kelp beds in the cove. Our secluded spot allows for exploration of the island’s unique plant and animal life.
When are the Franklin students traveling?
Our Franklin fifth graders will depart on Wednesday, April 15th and return on Friday, April 17th. Students will be asked to meet at Franklin school on the morning of April 15th no later than 6:50am to board buses that will take them to the San Pedro Catalina Express. The students will then board the 1-hour boat ride to Catalina, where they will be greeted by the CELP staff. On Friday, April 17th, our students will board the Catalina Express back to San Pedro and then buses back to Franklin, arriving after school. Your campers will be tired upon return from home with lots of incredible memories.
