Diversity, Equity, Inclusion And Accessibility Committee

Get involved with the DEIA Committee:

The mission of the Franklin PTA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Committee is to authentically empower and support the equitable representation of diverse groups and cultures in membership and leadership, through internal assessment, socio-cultural education,  cultural appreciation and humility.

This committee also strives to foster a community and school environment where every person and student feels welcomed, heard and celebrated.

Franklin partnered with Inclusion Matters, a non for profit organizations whose goal is to eliminate bias for children with disabilities. Our goal this year is to have all our 4th and 5th grade General Education students go through the Together, We Are Able® program to address social discrimination by promoting inclusion on school campuses.

The program includes a 60-minute classroom ability awareness workshop that helps general education students walk through their beliefs and assumptions about disabilities while preparing them for interaction with their peers with differences. Following this, the Gen Ed classroom is paired with their same aged peers from our social skills classroom (Special Ed) for a 25 minute inclusive recess, where students are paired together for a designated time of play and learning.

This year we will be running this program for 8 classrooms and are looking for our parent community for occasional support. Please contact us if you would like to get involved with the DEIA Committee or have questions - DEIA Chair, Lee Garrun is available. Learn more about DEIA at the district level and throughout our districts’ PTAs.
