Dia de Los Muertos: Franklin’s Community Ofrenda
In celebration of Dia de los Muertos, we invite our Franklin families to contribute to our community ofrenda. This multi-day holiday is a time of remembrance and a celebration of ancestors and those that have passed away. Ofrendas (altars) are assembled as a way to remember, celebrate and honor those that have passed away.
Now in its 4th year, our Franklin Community Ofrenda has become a Franklin tradition. It honors the Mexican culture as well as the individuals, groups and cultures that make this Franklin Community so beautiful and special. We hope you will participate in anyway that feels right to you.
Elements found on an ofrenda often include calaveras (skeletons), sugar skulls, marigolds (the bright color & potent scent is thought to attract the souls to the altar), papel picado (perforated paper banners), pan de muerto, water and salt. Altars are often personalized to include photographs of the departed as well as the food, drinks and things that the person loved.
Individuals and classes can contribute decorative elements such as artwork, drawings, homemade crafts, skeletons, skulls, butterflies, candles, marigolds, paper banners; or personal items such as photographs of their deceased loved ones, pets or other deceased individuals that you admire or would like to honor.
Please drop off your contributions by Wednesday, October 29th, in the school office .
The Ofrenda will be open for viewing from November 3rd through the 7th in the Cafetorium.
